ERIK DESROSIERS
	When I stumbled upon the opportunity to take part in DECA, I was a freshman at Indian River Community College (now Indian River State College). I wasn’t too sure what DECA was about but I was convinced by the energy and confidence that emanated from the people I met. The truth is, I did not truly realize what College DECA was all about until I experienced the thrill and intensity of competition; from that moment, I knew that it would become the benchmark for my professional progress throughout college. When I moved on to the University of Florida, many things changed, though I still continued to compete in DECA as a Gator. The rules and restrictions that I had to endure in junior college were finally gone; despite this, I maintained good discipline and managed to grab a few international titles. While it has brought me my share of pride and accomplishment, the most important aspect of my College DECA years was unequivocally the people I learned from, grew with and, of course, had a good time with. Many of my best friends today are amongst them. When I graduated from the University of Florida, I left for China to do business in Renewable Energy, notably Solar Photovoltaics. I have since been traveling the world to build my business and work hard for what I believe in. It is very obvious to me that taking part in DECA has sharpened my business instincts in ways that formal education could never have done -- even perfect grades mean nothing without initiative, good judgment, intelligent analysis and clear reasoning. Thanks to everybody who has taught me well during my time with DECA, as well as all those with whom I shared the thrills and challenges of competition.
